Strategic Philanthropy

Creating a Portfolio of Non Traditional Social Impact Causes and Charities

The principles of investing can be effectively and productively applied when conversations turn toward philanthropy.

Strategic philanthropy looks at ones social vision and how you would measure impact, and then aligns that vision with causes and organisations that will achieve your vision.

Ultimately this can be synonymous to creating a portfolio of charities. A diversified portfolio of charities provides you with the opportunities for greater impact on our community thereby seeing a stronger and more efficient return on your philanthropic investment.

If we take a fund manager approach to giving we can identify a grouping of causes that, when combined, will achieve a specific social outcome.

We believe that combining the allocation to classical or traditional causes such as Poverty Relief, Basic Education, Water, Disaster Relief together with our non-traditional charity classes such Muslim Media/PR, Art/Culture or Social Infrastructure allows for a more optimal outcome to our communities.

For example, you have an interest in the Palestinian cause, you could give to a charity working in providing aid on the ground, or you could give a combination that addresses aid, divestment/ sanctions and media/PR which would have a better more long term impact to the Palestinian issue.

In summary the purpose behind creating a charitable fund is to leverage your single donation to generate greater impact. Your one donation can be "deepened" by the complimentary agencies and causes that you also support and attacking the issue from several angles enabling you to diversify your approach. Just as you would diversify your investment portfolio to manage risk, you can diversify your charity portfolio to direct your social vision.

Working with the FF Foundation, a fund approach to philanthropy can be applied to any bespoke area or multiple areas: education (scholarships, classroom materials, teacher quality, access to technology, access to external opportunities, etc.), with the arts (scholarships for art students, theatre , literature, festivals showcasing a type of work, etc.), homelessness (shelters, job-placement, mental health, immigration support, etc.).
